Brand Typography: How to choose the best fonts for your brand?

When it comes to creating a strong brand identity, typography is often overlooked. Choosing the best fonts to use in your branding can play a crucial role in shaping how consumers perceive a brand.

From the font selection to the spacing, typography can make or break a brand identity…font selection is crucial!

So how do you choose the best fonts for your brand? Here are my 7 top tips for putting together a brand typography kit.

1.Consider your Logo Style

A great place to start when putting together your typography kit is to consider what has been used in your logo design. If you have a wordmark logo that is created out of retro script typography, you probably don’t want to use another script font in your typography kit.

Hot Tip: You want your logo to stand out! You may want to avoid using the typography used in your logo as part of your typography kit unless used sparingly!

2. Brand Personality

The font used in a brand identity should reflect the brand's personality. For example, a fancy script font may be appropriate for a luxury brand, while a more modern, sans-serif font may be more fitting for a marketing company.

Looking at a font, think about how it makes you feel. Does it look professional, quirky, rounded and friendly or is the font sharp and to the point? Remember, Not all sans serif fonts are equal!

3.Application

An important factor to note is where the font is going to be used? If you are styling typography for a restaurant or cafe, consider the typography that is going to be used on a menu, is it readible?

Do any characters mesh together and create words that shouldn’t be on your menu?

…some fonts can be an absolute PR disaster!

4.Hierarchy

This refers to the arrangement of type in a design and how it guides the viewer's eye through the information. Typographic hierarchy helps to emphasize the most important information and makes it easy for the viewer to understand the message.

5.License

To avoid ending up in any legal issue, it is important to read the license that comes along with your font’s to ensure you are using them correctly. Some fonts cannot be used for commercial use or have restrictions on where and how you can use them.

This is one of those situations where you should ask for permission and not forgiveness.

6.Competitors

Consider the fonts that your competitors are also using. Social media carousels are becoming a popular form of content and you don’t want to be mistaken for someone else if you use the exact same fonts. If you want to be noticed and set yourself apart from competitors, pick something different that is specific to your brand and not just the industry.

7.Consistency

Lastly, typography can also be used to create a consistent brand experience across all platforms. Consistency is key when it comes to creating a strong brand identity and using the same font across all platforms will help establish credibility and build trust with customers.

Typography plays a crucial role in building a strong brand identity. From font selection to typographic hierarchy and font pairing, paying attention to the details of typography can make a big difference in how a brand is perceived.

And let's be real, a well-designed typeface can make even the most mundane information look like a work of art.

Stick to the rules in your brand guidelines, they are there for a reason and they have been created with all of the above and more by a professional graphic designer.
